What I Have Lived For
Bertrand Russell
Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my
life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable
pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds,
have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a deep
ocean of anguish, reaching to the verge of despair.
I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy --- ecstasy so
great that I would have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours
of this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness ---
that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks
over the rim of the world into cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have
sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a
mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and
poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem
too good for human life, this is what --- at last --- I have found.
With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to
understand the hearts of men, I have wished to know why the stars
shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which
number holds away above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I
have achieved.
Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward
the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries
of pain reverberated in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured
by oppressors, helpless old people a hated burden to their sons, and
the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what
human life should be. I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, and I
too suffer.
This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and I would gladly live it again if the chance were offered to me.

Joke of Today
Who's 50 Cents
Jacky: I found 50 cents on the sidewalk in front of school.
Tommy: I think it's mine. I dropped 50 cents there today and couldn't find it.
Jacky: But what I found was two quarters.
Tommy: Then I'm sure it's mine. It probably broke when it hit the sidewalk.
Stars on a Snowy Night
冰心
The thermometer had dropped to 18 degrees below zero, but still chose
to sleep in the porch as usual. In the evening, the most familiar sight
to me would be stars in the sky. Though they were a mere sprinkle of
twinkling dots, yet I had become so accustomed to them that their
occasional absence would bring me loneliness and ennui.
It had been snowing all night, not a single star in sight. My
roommate and I, each wrapped in a quilt, were seated far apart in a
different corner of the porch, facing each other and chatting away.
She exclaimed pointing to something afar, “Look, Venus in rising!” I
looked up and saw nothing but a lamp round the bend in a mountain path.
I beamed and said pointing to a tiny lamplight on the opposite
mountain, “It’s Jupiter over there!”
More and more lights came into sight as we kept pointing here and
there. Lights from hurricane lamps flickering about in the pine forest
created the scene of a star-studded sky. With the distinction between
sky and forest obscured by snowflakes, the numerous lamp-lights now
easily passed for as many stars.
Completely lost in a make-believe world, I seemed to see all the
lamplights drifting from the ground. With the illusory stars hanging
still overhead, I was spared the effort of tracing their positions when
I woke up from my dreams in the dead of night.
Thus I found consolation even on a lonely snowy night !

Stars on a Snowy Night。
② “无聊” 翻译为ennui,是英语常用文学语言,意即a feeling of boredom caused by a lack of excitement or activity。
③ “一点星光都看不见” 译为not a single star in sight,是句中独立主格, 和not a single star being in sight同。
译为My roommate and I...,其中用My roommate(同寝之友)代替专门名词He(荷),以免外国读者把He读解为男性第三人称的代词。
She said pointing her finger at...,因英语to point one's finger at有“指责”的含义。
I raised my head to take a look 。译为I liked up即可。
⑦ “山路转折处” 译为round the bend in a mountain path。
“将繁灯当作繁星,简直是抵得过” 译为the numerous lamp-lights now easily passed for as many stars,其中短语to pass for 的意思是“被看作”,“被当作”等。

Joke of Today
Big hands
Teacher: If I had seven oranges in one hand and eight oranges in the other, what would I have?
Student: Big hands.
18.情绪不好时、烦躁时听听音乐,特别是“When you believe”、“Everybody hurts”、“Hero”、“In the end”、英雄交响曲这种唤人坚强向上的,或听听老罗语录,呵呵。

Today's topic:
As part of a global anti-piracy initiative, two weeks ago,Microsoft announced that it would launch an updated version of the anti-piracy systems Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) and, for the first time in China, also introduce the Office Genuine Advantage (OGA) which is aimed at targeting pirate versions of Microsoft Office including Office XP, Office 2003 and Office 2007.
A wave of consternation swept through Internet chat rooms after the announcement, with netizens worried that the constant appearance of a “black screen” would interrupt their ability to use their PC. Forum and BBS users came up with satirical black screen-themed desktop backgrounds to display their opposition to the new anti-piracy measures .
China.org.cn quote a Microsoft employee as saying
neither WGA nor OGA is aimed to hit Chinese users, and both of them have operated in the US market for some time. These services can be blocked by turning off Windows "Automatic Updates".
Software stores in Beijing also reported that sales of authorized Windows and Office software had increased after the “black screen” measures took effect.
Are you ready for the "black screen" made by Microsoft? Are you for or against it? Write your reasons down.
China.org.cn
Thank you for contacting us.
Thank you for your prompt reply.
如果回复并不及时,只要将“prompt”除去即可,你还可以说,“Thank you for getting back to me.”
Thank you for providing the requested information.
Thank you for all your assistance.
I truly appreciate …
your help in resolving the problem.”Thank you raising your concerns.
Thank you for your feedback.”
Thank you for your kind cooperation.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Thank you for your understanding.
Thank you for your consideration.
Thank you again for everything you'e done.

Don't Let the Dogs Bother You!
While driving down a winding country road, a man came upon a
youth running hard with three huge dogs snarling at his heels. The man
screeched his car to a halt and threw open the passenger door. “Get in,
get in!” he shouted.
“Thanks,” gasped the youth. “You're terrific! Most people won't offer me a ride when they see I have three dogs!”
1 To lose one's shirt
Did you hear what happened to Joe? He's lost his shirt, the poor
guy invested all his money in a fancy restaurant and it just went out
of business.
Be careful of salesmen who call on the phone and offer to sell you
land on the beach down in Florida. You can lose your shirt because the
chances are the land is under water at high tide.
2 To keep one's shirt on
To keep one's shirt on
Keep your shirt on, Harry; we have plenty of time to catch the train.
To Keep one's shirt on
Honey, keep your shirt on, please! I'm sorry, but the boss made me work late at the office.
3 To give you the shirt off his back.
从字面上来解释,to give you the shirt off his back
所以,to give you the shirt off his back指尽自己的力量帮助别人。
例如:Of course Dad gets mad at me sometimes for no good reason. But if
I ever need it, I know he would give me the shirt off his back.
Pete never says very much. But when he hears about somebody who's
sick in the hospital or lost his job, he's always the first to put his
hand in his pocket and bring out money to help. Yes, sir, he's the kind
of man who'd give you the shirt off his back.
4 A stuffed shirt
A stuffed
My boss is a stuffed shirt: all he talks about is how important
his ancestors are, how he was number one in his class at his
university, and the wonderful things he thinks he's done for our
company.
I think I'll vote for Jimmy Brown instead of the other guy James
Leland Elegant the third. Jimmy isn't a stuffed shirt like
Elegant--he's a friendly, informal guy like us ordinary people.

A Miser's Prayer
There was once a very poor person who was also very stingy.
But his manner of praying to God must be one of the most famous,
even more so than the Bible's "Give us this day our daily bread."
(Matthew 6:11)
So the old miser was heard saying his prayers like this: "Oh, my
God, my Lord! My Almighty! If the Almighty - may Your holy name be
blessed forever - if You gave me a hundred thousand dollars, I would
immediately give ten thousand to the poor. I promise I would! You know
that, don't You? And if the Almighty - may Hes be blessed - does not
trust me about my promise, then please deduct the ten thousand in
advance and only give me ninety thousand."

You Raise Me Up
Josh Groban
When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up… To more than I can be.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up… To more than I can be.
There is no life – no life without its hunger;
Each restless heart beats so imperfectly;
But when you come and I am filled with wonder,
Sometimes, I think I glimpse eternity.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up… To more than I can be.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up… To more than I can be.
You raise me up… To more than I can be.

Joke of Today
My dog can't read.
Mrs. Brown: Oh, my dear, I have lost my precious little dog!
Mrs. Smith: But you must put an advertisement in the papers!
Mrs. Brown: It's no use, my little dog can't read.
When Love Beckons You
When her love beckons you, follow him, though his ways are hard and
steep. And when his wings enfold you, yield to him, though the sword
hidden among his pinions may wound you. And when he speaks to you,
believe in him, though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north
wind lays waste the garden.
For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is
for your growth so is he for your pruning. Even as he is for your
growth so is he for your pruning. Even as he ascends to your height and
caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun, so shall he
descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.
But if, in your fear, you would seek only love’s peace and love’s
pleasure, then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and
pass out of love’s threshing-floor, into the seasonless world where you
shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all ofyour
tears. Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.
Love possesses not, nor would it be possessed, for love is sufficient
unto love.
Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself. But if you love and have desires, let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love.
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love’s ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart.

清晨,带着一颗生翼的心醒来,感谢又一个充满爱的日子;
午休,沉思爱的心醉神怡;
黄昏,带着感激归家;

The Making Of Ancestors
In one classroom, a teacher was explaining to the classthat
their ancestors were Adam and Eve. A little child raised his hand and
said, "My father taught me differently.
The teacher asked, "What? The little child answered, "My father said that our ancestors were monkeys.
And the teacher replied, "That's your family's business. It has nothing to do with us."

Joke of Today
The High Cost of Living
There was once a person who was very stingy.
One day he tried to cross a river by himself, but he slipped
because the current was extremely strong. And then the current swept
him away, down the middle of the river. So he shouted, "Can anyone help
me? I'll give you money!"
There was a person on a boat nearby and he said, "OK. For fifty
dollars I'll help you." But the man in the river replied, "Fifty
dollars! That's too expensive. I'll give you twenty." So the person on
the boat said,"No, no, that's too cheap."
By now the man in the river was trying very hard to breathe and was
even swallowing some of the river water. So he said, "OK, OK, thirty
dollars!" But the person on the boat said, "No, no. Forty dollars is my
last price."
And the manin the water said,"I - I - I'd rather die!"
1. ABC corporation. May I help you?
you?" 或是如果要更客气一点的话则可以说 "How can I help you?"
但基本上 "May I help you?" 跟 "How can I
help you?"
Thanks for calling ABC corporation, if you
know your party's last name or extension, press 1. If you want to
receive information or publication, press 2. If you want to talk to the
operator, press pound sign or remain on the line."
2. And you are?
你是?
如果人家打电话来是要找你的上司, "May I talk to your manager?"
最客气的问法是, "Whom I am speaking with?" 或是 "Whom am I talking to?"
This is Benlin."
像是 "And you are?"
而且事实上 "And you are?"
(reception). 来访的客人如果说, "I'm looking for Mr. Wolf."
接待小姐就可以反问他, "And you are?"
3. I'll put her on the phone. Just a second.
Put someone on the phone
Could you
please just put her on the phone?"
I'll put her on the phone. Just a second."
例如同样的情况你可以说, "I'm transferring your call."
或是 "I'm redirecting your call."
"One moment, please." 或是, "OK. I'll put you through."
4. Would you mind holding for one minute?
our representatives are currently busy serving their customers. Your
call will be answered in approximate 5 minutes" (我们所有的客服人员都在忙着服务他们的顾客,
Please continue to hold, your call is
very important to us."
Would you mind holding for one minute?"
Sorry, I am still on the phone. Could you
hold for another minute?"
5. He's out for lunch. Would you like to try again an hour later?
是多余的, 通常老美只讲 be out for something 就行了. 如果要再简化一点, 单说, "He is on lunch."
或是 "He is on (lunch) break."
我们也可以用 call back/ try back 这样的讲法. 例如你可以建议别人, "Why don't you call back
in 30 minutes?"
your message?" 或是 "Would you like to leave a message?"
6. She is not here but you can call her machine.
machine. 例如 "You can call her machine."
如果是 "I
want to check on my machine."
machine?" 像六人行 (Friends) 里有一集 Chandler 说, "I got her machine." 结果 Joey
interestingly enough, her leaf blower (machine) picked up the phone."
7. I'm interested in your CRM software. Can you give me an quote?
Can you give
me a quote?" 或 "Can you give me an estimate?"
"You need a coat?"
另外, estimate 和 quote 也可以指‘报价单’而言, 例如你可以要求别人, "Can you send me a sample with an estimate ASAP?"
8. I'd like to place an order for a DL-1100 color printer.
I want to buy this, I want to buy that."
如果像是公司要采购商品时, 最好正式一点用 order, 或是更完整一些说 place an order for, 例如 "I want to
order a color printer." 或是, "I want to place an order for a color
printer."
9. I'm calling to check my order status.
ordered something yesterday. Can you check if you've shipped it or
not."
order status." 或是 "I want to track my order status."
You wanna check passenger status?"
10. I was referred to you by Mr. Gordon.
"I was referred to you by someone."
I got your number from a coupon,
which says your product is 50% off today."

Joke of Today
But the teacher cried
The six-year-old John was terribly spoiled . His father knew it,
but his grandma doted on him. He hardly left her side. And when he
wanted anything, he either cried or threw a temper tantrum.
Then came his first day of school, his first day away from his grandmother's loving arms.
When he came home from school his grandma met him at the door.
"Was school all right?" she asked, "Did you get along all right? did you cry?"
"Cry?" John asked. "No, I didn't cry, but the teacher did!"

Today's topic:
I have been so busy these days that I can't help knowing that the exact day of Chongyang Festival has gone.
he Chongyang Festival falls on the ninth day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, so it is also known as the Double Ninth Festival. It has been an important festival since ancient times.
The festival is held in the golden seanson of autumn,at the harvest-time. The bright clear weather and the joy of bringing in the harvest make for a festive happy atmosphere. The Double Ninth Festival is usually perfect for outdoor avtivities. Many people go hiking and climbing in the country, enjoying Mother Nature's final burst of color before she puts on her dull winter cloak.
Since nine is the highest odd digit, people take two of them together to signify longevity. Therefore, the ninth day of the ninth month has become a special day for people to pay their respects to elderly and a day for the elderly to enjoy themselves. It has also been declared China's day for the elderly.
So what did you do to honor your parents on the the Double Ninth Festival?
Or you have forgotten it just as I did?

Helping with Math
A primary school boy came home and asked his father, "Father,
this mathematics question is very difficult. Can you help me, please?"
The father came over and the son said, "In this homework, the
teacher said, "Suppose your father earns only one thousand dollars per
month, and your mother spends about one thousand seven hundred dollars
per month. So, what is the answer?"
The father said, "Oh, this you have to go and ask your mother. She is the expert!"
Never say good-bye if you still want to try.
Never give up if you still feel you can go on.
Never say you don’t love a person anymore if you can’t let go.
It takes only a minute to get a crush on someone, an hour to like
someone, and a day to love someone-but it takes a lifetime to forget
someone.
Don’t go for looks; they can deceive. Don't go for wealth; even
that fades away. Go for someone who makes you smile because it takes
only a smile to make a dark day seem bright.
Dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go; be what you
want to be, because you have only one life and one chance to do all the
things you wants to do.

Oooh-oooh
Everybody's got something
They had to leave behind
One regret from yesterday
That just seems to grow with time
There's no use looking back or wondering
(Or wondering)
How it could be now or might have been
(Or might have been)
All this I know but still I can't find ways
To let you go
I never had a dream come true
Till the day that I found you
Even though I pretend that I've moved on
You'll always be my baby
I never found the words to say
You're the one I think about each day
And I know no matter where life takes me to
A part of me will always be with you, yeah
Somewhere in my memory
I've lost all sense of time (ah-ha, ha-ha)
And so my road can never be'cos yesterday is all that fills my mind
There's no use looking back or wondering
(Wondering)
How it should be now or might have been
(Or might have been)
All this I know but still I can't find ways
To let you go
I never had a dream come true
Till the day that I found you
Even though I pretend that I've moved on
You'll always be my baby
I never found the words to say
You're the one I think about each day
And I know no matter where life takes me to
A part of me will always be
You'll always be the dream that fills my head
Yes you will, say you will
You know you will, oh baby
You'll always be the one I know I'll never forget
It's no use looking back or wondering
(Or wondering)
Because love is a strange and funny thing
(And funny thing)
No matter how I try and try
I just can't say goodbye, no, no, no, no
I never had a dream come true
Till the day that I found you

You'll always be my baby
I never found the words

Joke of Today
A Very Patient Pooch
There was a barber in a developing country who had a little shed
at the roadside to cut hair, and a certain man used to come in
regularly for haircuts.
One day he noticed that a dog was always sitting underneath, near
the chair where the customers sat for their haircuts. So the man asked
the barber, "Is that your dog?"
And the barber replied, "No, he always comes every day. It's not my dog. I don't know whose dog it is."
Then the customer asked, "So if it's not your dog, you never feed him, right?"
And the barber said,"No."
And the customer said, "Then why does he always come here every day?"
And the barber answered, "He's waiting in case an ear comes off."
Three Days to See
BY Helen Keller/
All of us have read thrilling stories in which the hero had only a
limited and specified time to live. Sometimes it was as long as a year;
sometimes as short as twenty-four hours, but always we were interested
in discovering just how the doomed man chose to spend his last days or
his last hours. I speak, of course, of free men who have a choice, not
condemned criminals whose sphere of activities is strictly delimited.
Such stories set up thinking, wondering what we should do under
similar circumstances. What associations should we crowd into those last
hours as mortal beings? What happiness shouldwe find in reviewing the
past, what regrets?
Sometimes I have thought it would be an excellent rule to live each
day as if we should dietomorrow. Such an attitude would emphasize
sharply the values of life. We should live each daywith a gentleness, a
vigor, and a keenness of appreciation which are often lost when time
stretchesbefore us in the constant panorama of more days and months and
years to come. There are those,of course, who would adopt the epicurean
motto of “Eat, drink, and be merry,” most people wouldbe chastened by
the certainty of impending death.
Most of us take life for granted. We know that one day we must die,
but usually we picture that day as far in the future, when we are in
buoyant health, death is all but unimaginable. We seldom think of it.
The days stretch out in an endless vista. So we go about our petty
task, hardly aware of our listless attitude towards life.
The same lethargy, I am afraid, characterizes the use of our
faculties and senses. Only the deaf appreciate hearing, only the blind
realize the manifold blessings that lie in sight. Particularly does
this observation apply to those who have lost sight and hearing in
adult life. But those who have never suffered impairment of sight or
hearing seldom make the fullest use of these blessed faculties. Their
eyes and ears take in all sights and sound hazily, without
concentration, and with little appreciation. It is the same old story
of not being grateful for what we conscious of health until we are ill.
I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being
were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during his
early adult life. Darkness would make him more appreciative of sight;
silence would teach him the joys of sound.
Now and then I have tested my seeing friends to discover what they
see. Recently I was visited by a very good friend who had just returned
from a long walk in the woods, and I asked her what she had observed.
“Nothing in particular,” she replied. I might have been incredulous had
I not been accustomed to such responses, for long ago I became
convinced that the seeing see little.
How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk for an hour through
the woods and see nothing worthy of note? I who cannot see find
hundreds of things to interest me through mere touch. I feel the
delicate symmetry of a leaf. I pass my hands lovingly about the smooth
skin of a silver birch,or the rough shaggy bark of a pine. In spring I
touch the branches of trees hopefully in search of a bud, the first
sign of awakening Nature after her winter’s sleep I feel the
delightful, velvety texture of a flower, and discover its remarkable
convolutions; and something of the miracle of Nature is revealed to me.
Occasionally, if I am very fortunate, I place my hand gently in a small
tree and feel the happy quiver of a bird in full song. I am delighted
to have cool waters of a brook rush
through my open fingers. To me a lush carpet of pine needles or spongy
grass is more welcome than the most luxurious Persian rug. To me the
pageant of seasons is a thrilling and unending drama, the action of
which streams through my finger tips. At times my heart cries out with
longing to see all these things. If I can get so much pleasure from
mere touch, how much more beauty must be revealed by sight. Yet, those
who have eyes apparently see little. The panorama of color and action
fill the world is taken for granted. It is human, perhaps, to
appreciate little that which we have and to long for that which we have
not, but it is a great pity that in the world of light and the gift of
sight is used only as mere convenience rather that as a means of adding
fullness to life.
Oh, the things that I should see if I had the power of sight for three days!
