 Joke of Today

Who Is Talking

An army general telephoned to his unit in another place wanting to speak to someone. He said, "Hello!"There was a soldier, playing like a sergeant or something,at the other end of the line. He didn't recognize the voice of the high general commander in chief. He said, "Hello! Are you okay? Are you all right? What's up, doc? We should go out drinking again sometime. All right?

So the general shouts at the top of his voice, "Do you know who are you talking with? Shut up!"

Suddenly, it was quiet for a long time at the other end of the line. Then he asked, "Who is it? Who's speaking?".The General said, "I'm the General, Commander in Chief of your unit."

There was a longer pause, greater silence; and the other end said, "Do you recognize who's speaking to you also?"
The General said, "No, who are you?" The soldier said, "Oh, very lucky for me that you didn't! Good bye!"

Against All Odds

How can I just let you walk away
Just let you leave without a trace
When I stand here taking every breath with you, ooh
You're the only one who really knew me at all

How can you just walk away from me
When all I can do is watch you leave
'Cause we shared the laughter and the pain
    And even shared the tears
You're the only one who really knew me at all

So take a look at me now
"Cause there's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face

Take a look at me now
Cause there's just an empty space
And you coming back to me is against all odds
And that's what I've got to face
I wish I could just make you turn around
Turn around and see me cry
There's so much I need to say to you
    So many reasons why
You're the only one who really knew me at all

So take a look at me now
'Cause there's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me.
Just the memory of your face.

Take a look at me now.
'Cause there's just an empty space.
    But to wait for you.
Is that's all I can do.
And that's what I've got to face.
Take a good look at me now.
'cause I'll still be standing here.
And you coming back to me is against all odds.
That's the chance I've got to take.
Take a look at me now.

The current economy has made job-hunting a vital skill set for increasing numbers of people. But even in the best of economic times, it pays to understand what you can do to make yourself more appealing in the marketplace.

Current career trends suggest that an individual will change careers at least 7 times during a lifetime. This reality presents the opportunity to fulfill several of our aspirations. No longer do we have to choose only one road. Instead, we can visualize a broader map, and believe that we will likely come across those other roads somewhere down the line.

Increasing marketability is a sure way of being more prepared for a career change. The following are ten strategies for sharpening skills and increasing marketability:

    1. Visualize. 想象

Set aside some time to think about where you are in life, and where you want to be. Are you happy? What parts of your career excite you, and what frustrates you? Where do you want to be in five years? In ten? Give yourself permission to dream.

    2. Take Inventory.

What activities are you currently doing, both on the job and in your leisure time? What skills do they require? How would you rate your skills? Which ones need improving? How could you sharpen them? Which skills do you enjoy using, and which skills do you wish you used more often?

    3. Update your resume.

Regularly update your resume. Visiting a local career center or scanning current resume books can keep your resume looking polished. You also may want to have resumes that highlight different skills. For example, you might have one specifically for management positions, and another for advertising positions. Also, keep hard copies of your resume close at hand and give it out freely.

    4. Attend Workshops.

Take advantage of workshops offered by your employer. Dare to go to a training session that doesn't "exactly fit" your job. For example, if your job requires computer skills, in addition to computer-related workshops, consider attending a workshop on leadership. If your organization doesn't offer workshops, consider taking a course at a local community college.

    5. Cross-train.

Make your current job more interesting and enhance your skills at the same time by varying your job responsibilities. Continuously hone your skills that are transferable to other positions, corporations, and even career fields. Always be quick to volunteer for opportunities to learn different skills.

    6. Join committees.

Committees are a great way to network and to improve skills. Vary the committees on which you serve. Chair (成为领导者) a committee. Choose to be on a committee that will challenge you intellectually, emotionally, skill-wise, etc. In other words, make a decision to grow.

    7. Do something different.

Been doing the same thing for years? Maybe now is the time for change. Try something you've always wanted to do, but for whatever reason, haven't yet. You'll learn more about yourself, enhance skills, make contacts, and feel alive again.

    8. Make new contacts, strengthen the old.

Networking is the primary way people get interviews. View every opportunity as a networking one. The goal isn't to determine, "What can this person do for me," but finding out what you and the other person have to offer each other. Form and maintain relationships at work, through your family, in social organizations, and in your community. Remember, you will need to nurture relationships through staying in touch with your contacts, sending cards, be alert to interesting articles, and other "thinking of you" activities.

    9. Volunteer.

Volunteering can expand your network and enhance skills. It's also an easy way to try out some of your career aspirations. Considering a career change that will take you out of the corporate world and into the lives of kids? Try volunteering at your local school. There's no career risk, just a chance to grow, learn about yourself and give back to your community.

    10. Create a Marketability Plan.

Perhaps the most important suggestion is to create a marketability plan. Take a good, hard look at yourself. Ask yourself the tough questions. "If I were an employer, would I hire me?" Make a plan to increase your marketability. Which of these activities could you commit to trying in the next month? Set a goal and a time-line, and get started!

    Special English(特别英语)介绍:

    Special English 又叫“慢速英语”,是VOA 专为全世界非英语国家初学英语的听众安排的一种简易、规范的英语广播节目。该节目创始于50年代末期,是VOA 的专家们研究如何与世界各地的英语学习者进行交际的产物。它正式开播于1959年10月。当时只面向欧洲和中东,但由于这个节目适合许多国家英语学习者的需要,所以它的广播对象不久就扩大到世界其他地区,并很快在全世界范围内产生了广泛的影响。现在这个节目对欧洲、非洲和拉丁美洲每晚广播一次,对加勒比地区每晚广播一次(星期天除外),对东南亚广播次数最多,每天上午两次,晚上三次。

    30多年来,VOA 为了办好Special English节目,进行了大量的调查研究工作,对播音速度、内容及用词范围都作了具体规定,基本上达到了既能为英语学习者提供信息,又不损害英语本身风格的目的,使之成为VOA 独具特色,拥有最大量听众的节目。

    美国著名词汇学家S. B. Flexmer 指明了Special English的三条标准,也就是它所“特别”的地方:

    它是一种由美国人最常用的1500个基本单词为主体构成的美国英语;

    它用简短、明晰的句子写作和广播;

    它以每分钟90个单词的速度,即2/3的Standard English(标准英语)速度进行广播。

—You can ask me any question.

--I know you are good at ….

向你的沟通对手表示你认知他的能力,并寄希望他有所表现:“I know you are good at handling difficult situations, and I believe I can count on you."(我知道你擅于处理棘手问题,并相信我可以依赖您。)

—I believe our experts can give you helpful advice for the problem in your company.

当对手正在为某个问题烦恼,而你正好能够帮他忙,一句 "I believe our experts can give you helpful advice for the problem in your company."

    —Bad news,Im afraid.

—Our costs are way up too.

—The special price will be effective until May 30.

一句“ Unless you ordr in February, we wont be able to deliver in April.”(除非您在二月就下订单,否则我们无法在四月交货。)或者“ The Special price will be effective until Mag 30.”(特价的有效期限到五月三十日。)

--Dont say“ I told you so!"

—Your views regarding management differ from mine.

Someone must have given you wrong information."(一定是有人把错误的情报给了你。)

—Can we continue the meeting tomorrow?

你可以在适亚的时候提出“Can we continue the meeting tomorrow?”(我们可不可以明天再继续开会?)

--If he says: I will find some detailed informa tion for you when I return to my office.

当沟通对手就某个问题说“ I will find some detailed information for you when I return to my office."(我回办公室时,会为你找详细的资料。)

    — If he says: I forgot to bring it with me.

当沟通对手应该向你提供预期中的资料,而他总是说“I forgot to bring it with me.”(我忘记带了。)

--As our record notes, it should be...

这时,你可根据沟通时做的记录提出质疑:“As our record notes, it should be..."(照我们记录上记载的,那应该是…)

    — Should we try another place?

--I dont want you to think that I did this.

把负责的人找来,指给他看损坏的情况,告诉他“I dont want you to think that I did this”(我不想让你认为是我造成的。)

Joke of Today

New Year Resolution

Hoping to excite student interest in our reading center, I asked each teacher to write a New Year's resolution on a special form and send it to me.

After I posted the resolutions on the bulletin board in the reading center, one young teacher stopped by, looked at them for a few minutes, then left abruptly.

Passing two teachers on their way in, she stormed, "My resolution isn't posted - and mine was one of the first ones in!"

I couldn't help but overhear, and the tone of her voice sent me flying to my desk in rearch of a misplaced resolution. Looking rapidly through stacks of papers, I uncovered hers. It read, "I resolve not to let little things upset me. "

Temptation comes to all of us, whether or not we succumb depends on our ability to recognize its disguise.Sometimes it arrives in a form of an old flame, flickering back to life, or a new friend who could end up being so much more, or a young child who wakens feelings we didn't know we had.And so we give in to temptation all the while knowing come morning, we'll have to suffer the consequences.

We've all done something in our lives us we are ashamed of.Some of us have fallen for the wrong man, some have let go of the right women, there're those who have humiliated their parents and those who have failed their children.Yes, we've all made mistakes that diminish us and those we love. But there is redemption if we try to learn from those mistakes and grow.

When the truth is ugly, people try to keep it hidden, because they know if revealed, the damage it will do.So they conceal it within sturdy walls, or they place it behind closed doors, or they obscure it with clever disguises. But truth , no matter how ugly, always emerges, and someone we care about always ends up getting hurt, and someone else will revel in their pain, and that's the ugliest truth of all.

As I look back at the world I left behind, it’s all so clear to me. The beauty that waits to be unveiled. The mysteries that long to be uncovered. But people so rarely stop to take a look. They just keep moving. It’s a shame, really. There’s so much to see.

I remember the world. Every detail. And what I remember the most is how afraid I was. What a waste! You see, to live in fear, is not to live at all. I wish I could tell this to those I left behind, but would it do any good? Probably not. I understand now, there will always be those who face their fears... and there will always be those who run away.

People, by their very nature, are always on the lookout for intruders... trying to prevent those on the outside from getting in. But there will always be those who force their way into our lives... just as there will be those we invite in. But the most troubling of all will be the ones who stand on the outside looking in... the ones we never truly get to know.

The search for power begins when we are quite young. As children, we were taught that the power of good triumphs over the power of evil. But as we get older, we realize that nothing is ever that simple. Traces of evil always remain...

Competition, it means different things to different people. But whether it抯 a friendly rivalry... or a fight to the death, the end result is the same. There will be winners and there will be losers. Of course, the trick is to know which battles to fight. You see, no victory comes without a price.

There is a widely read book that tells us everyone is a sinner. Of course, not everyone feels guilt over the bad things they do. In contrast, there are those who assume more than their share of the blame. There are others, who sooth their consciences with small acts of kindness. Or by telling themselves their sins were justified. Finally, there are the ones who simply vow to do better next time, and pray for forgiveness. Sometimes, their prayers are answered.

People are complicated creatures. On the one hand, able to perform great acts of charity. On the other, capable of the most underhanded forms of betrayal. It’s a constant battle that ranges within all of us, between the better angels of our nature, and the temptation of our inner demons. And sometimes the only way to ward off the darkness... is to shine the light of compassion.

The director answered: "Dozing off is also a way to express my opinion!"

Night after night, she came to tuck me in, even long after my childhood years. Following her longstanding custom, she'd lean down and push my long hair out of the way, then kiss my forehead.

I don't remember when it first started annoying me — her hands pushing my hair that way. But it did annoy me, for they felt work-worn and rough against my young skin. Finally, one night, I shouted out at her, "Don't do that anymore —your hands are too rough!" She didn't say anything in reply. But never again did my mother close out my day with that familiar expression of her love.

Time after time, with the passing years, my thoughts returned to that night. By then I missed my mother's hands, missed her goodnight kiss on my forehead. Sometimes the incident seemed very close, sometimes far away. But always it lurked, in the back of my mind.

Well, the years have passed, and I'm not a little girl anymore. Mom is in her mid-seventies, and those hands I once thought to be so rough are still doing things for me and my family. She's been our doctor, reaching into a medicine cabinet for the remedy to calm a young girl's stomach or soothe the boy's scraped knee. She cooks the best fried chicken in the world... gets stains out of blue jeans like I never could...

Now, my own children are grown and gone. Mom no longer has Dad, and on special occasions, I find myself drawn next door to spend the night with her. So it was late on Thanksgiving Eve, as I slept in the bedroom of my youth, a familiar hand hesitantly run across my face to brush the hair from my forehead. Then a kiss, ever so gently, touched my brow.

In my memory, for the thousandth time, I recalled the night my young voice complained, "Don't do that anymore — your hands are too rough!" Catching Mom's hand in hand, I blurted out how sorry I was for that night. I thought she'd remember, as I did. But Mom didn't know what I was talking about. She had forgotten — and forgiven — long ago.

That night, I fell asleep with a new appreciation for my gentle mother and her caring hands. And the guilt that I had carried around for so long was nowhere to be found.

I experienced a terrible hard time.

I had a terrible hard time.

Do you understand my meaning, sir? = Do you take my meaning, sir?

I will preside over the meeting. = I will take the meeting.

I will subscribe to the local newspaper. = I will take the local newspaper.

They occupied the city. = They took the city.

The boy resembles his father. = The boy takes after his father.

I had a nightmare last night. = I had a bad dream last night.

I don‘t understand this word. I don’t know this word.

He is stupid. = He is foolish. = He is a fool. = He is silly.

The food is delicious. = The food is tasty. = The food is nice to eat.

They discontinued the work at five. = They stopped the work at five.

His temper is nasty. = His temper is terrible. = He has a bad temper.

He is stubborn. = He is not tame.

The knife is blunt. = The knife is not sharp.

This is expensive. = This is not cheap.

She is talkative. = She is never quiet.

He is a dumb. = He is a person who can not speak.

He refused. = He said “no”.

I‘ve never seen such a stubborn person. = I’ve never seen such a person who never listens to other‘s advice.

  (1)

Examination is a common headache to students all over the world. They all detest is, but all being domineered by it. It represents a trial; the grade its verdict.

Nowadays, examination has become a popular form of testing. It almost can dominate one‘s future. I am not exaggerating; for you all know it is true. If we want to obtain a diploma, we must first pass the exams. If we do not have a diploma, we may not find a job easily. That is the reason why all students are nervous and pale when they are sitting for an important examination which may concern their future.

But as long as examination is on its peak of power, we must be philosophical of it. Do not always think of the harm that it brings, but think of the good it may do to us. If we do not have exams, we may indulge ourselves in other things instead of books. Exams have to always drive us on. What is wrong for learning more and thoroughly?

  (2)

Examination is a common headache to students all over the world. They all dislike it (hate it), but all being ruled by it. It is a trial; the grade its decision.

Nowadays, examination has become a popular form of testing. It almost can control one‘s future. I am telling the truth, for you all know it is true. If we want to get a graduation paper, we may not find a job easily. That is the reason why all students are nervous and pale when they are sitting for an important examination which may have something to do with their future.

But as long as examination is on its highest point of power, we must have a calm attitude to it. Do not always think of the harm that it brings, but think of the good it may do to us. If we do not have exams, we may spend our time on other things instead of books. Exams have to always drive us on. What is wrong for learning more and deeply?

Congratulations! You wowed your prospective employers on your first interview and have been called back for an encore. So, how will the second interview be different from the first?

This time around, expect to spend more time at the company, talk to more people, individually and collectively, and have your skills and personality scrutinized more closely.

The Employer's Point of View

From an employer's perspective, the second interview is a chance to closely evaluate a candidate's abilities and interpersonal skills. Your prospective employer wants to see that you can do the job and work well with colleagues.

Be aware that many employers bring in several candidates on the same day to streamline the second interview process. Your challenge is to distinguish yourself from the other candidates.

To show you're a good fit with the company, focus on explaining how your abilities and experiences would enable you to do the job. Be specific. Offer concrete examples that highlight your competence and compatibility.

  Who You'll Meet

On your first interview, you probably met with one or two people. This time, be prepared to meet several more over the course of the day, including potential managers, coworkers and other staff members.

You may meet individually with several people, who will most likely ask you similar questions. Keep your answers consistent but mix up your delivery so that your answers don't sound stale or staged. If possible, before the interview acquire a list of the people you'll be meeting with and do a little research on each one. Then ask questions that show your knowledge of each person.

If you meet with a panel or group, be sure to make eye contact with both the individual asking the question and the group as a whole.

  Steps for Follow Up 后续步骤

It's rare to receive an offer on the spot, but it does happen occasionally. If the feedback is consistently positive over the course of the day, you may get a job offer at the end of the interview. If that happens, don't make a hasty decision. Ask for time to think about it.

If you don't get an offer, be sure to immediately send a brief thank you note to every person you spoke with. Some companies make hiring decisions in a matter of days, but many can take weeks to make their final choice.

Be patient, be flexible and be ready for an offer or an invitation for yet another interview.

    —I think I should call a lawyer.

或没告诉他“ I think I should call a lawyer."(我想我该叫个律师。)

--What seems to be the trouble?

向对方探询“What seems to be the troubte?”(有什么困难吗?)或问一句“Is there something that needs our attention?"

    —Please tell me about it.

你的一句“Please tell me about it”(请告诉我这件事的情况。)或“Im sorry for my error and assure you I will take great care in performing the work”(我为我的错误感到抱歉,并向您保证,我会尽全力处理此事。)

--Well send you a replacement right away.

或者告诉他“We can adjust the price for you if you keep the material.”(如果您留下这批材料,我们可以为您调整价格。)

    —Is this waht we decided?

一旦发现疑点,应立刻询问对方“Is this what we decided? 合约内容真的错得离谱,就应告诉对方“Ill have to return this contract to you unsigned."(我得将这份合约退还给你,不能签名。)

    —Would you mind repeating it?

Would you mind repeating it?"(您介意再讲一遍吗?),相信对方不但会再说一遍,而且连速度都会放慢些。

  -Is it important that ……?

或"Is it helpful if ……?"(如果……

-The best compromise we can maks is……

The best compromise we can make is …… This is the lowest possible price."(这是最低的可能价格了。)

-Please let me think it over.

Please let me think it over."(请让我考虑一下。)或" Would it be all right to give you an answer tomorrow?"(明天再答复您行吗?)

  No, but ……

如果你说"No,but……"

  Stop asking "Have you decided?"

  -Silence is golden.

将所达成的协议逐一列入记录—— Let's have the agreed items recorded. Let's have the agreed items recorded."

  Don't boast!

We can give you a guarantee 100 years."(我们可以给您一百年的保证。)

……then I'll drive you to the airport for your flight at 7:00.

I'll have my secretary type the contract for you to sign at once, then I'll drive you to the airport for your flight at 7:00.

-I'm glad to have met you, Mr. Lee.

因此商议一完成,立即以 "I'm glad to have met you, Mr. Lee."(李先生,很高兴认识您。)

How many time are you available?

We are one of the top 3 private label suppliers in the global market. Our producing capacity is more than 5,0000000000000/units each week. Furthermore, you know, the knowledge and the know-how sometimes is more important than the machines and equipments. Fortunately, we have accumulated enough producing and management know-how from our long-term co-operation with XXXX company. I am sure we can help you to reduce your international sourcing costs, we can help you to increase your bottom line.

How many stores does your company have?

Do you distribute your goods only in your domestic market? Or in the whole Europe? Which country is your biggest market?

What do you think how about the trade show? Did you find everything which you need exactly?

Our quality is very good.

We have supplied our products for XXXXX company for 5 years, and XXXX company is quiet satisfied for our quality. So I believe we can meet or exceed your quality requirements.

Crystal Shoes

“Hi! John.” Mary ran towards me with a rare bright smile on her face, saying, “I’m gonna have a dance performance tonight. I hope you’ll come. Here is the ticket. Don’t forget!” She left in a hurry, disappearing in the throngs of people quickly.

“What?!” I just came to my mind, “What performance? Dance? Is that credible?” I asked myself. Mary was not such kind of girl. She was a quite ordinary one. I had never seen her making up or wearing attractive clothes, moreover, she always wore her big black-frame glasses, for she did not know how to dress up indeed. What a terrible thing, especially for a plain girl!

“I should go to, I must go to. That’s a miracle!” I thought.

I arrived at the hall with the ticket, and found my seat. Her performance was the seventh one. I knew I would suffer from a hard time before her turn, for I had no sense of art, but her performance was worth of watching, no matter how long I would wait for.

Time went slowly, I struggled with myself not to fall asleep.

“Let’s welcome the next exciting dance — Latin!” Applause fulfilled the hall at once.

I opened my eyes as large as possible, fearing to lose anything. Wearing a golden and shinning skirt, Mary appeared on the glorious stage. Her dress went well with the brilliant lights. Such scene seemed to be a mermaiden showing up under the glittering sunshine, meanwhile, I could feel all the audience in the hall focused their eyes on her and it was also hard for me to remove my sights from her. She was so beautiful: her stature was slim; her long golden hair lay back in curls over her delicate ears. Dancing with a charming smile, she was fully absorbed in the Latin music. At this moment, she looked like a pretty butterfly flying on the splendid stage… I could hardly believe my eyes.

After all the performance ended, I waited for her at the gate.

“Hi!” She stood in front of me with a bag and her crystal high-heeled shoes in her hands, and dressed as she used to be, but the making-up still could be seen.

“How do you feel?” There was not a little bit tired expression appeared on her face.

    “Fantastic!” I answered.

“Ha, ha. I knew it would be.” She could not conceal her excitement, laughing like a child.

    “May I lend a hand?”

“Thank you!” She handed her crystal shoes to me which were shinning in the wonderful starry night; at the mean time, I realized that every girl has a pair of special shoes which are like the crystal shoes of Cinderella.

这是关键,听到什么but.although,and ,therefor……

—Id like to make an appointment with Mr. Lee. dating

Id like to make an appointment with Mr.Lee."(我想和李先生约见一次。)

--I will arrange everything. Something nothing anything

—No interruptions during the meeting! no disturbance ,please

    --Behave yourself!

    --Its my fault. Mistake error

It's my fault."(对不起,是我的错。)

—I have a complaint to make.

—We have a pamphlet in English.

当客户听到你说 "We have a pamphlet in English."(我们有英文的小册子。)或 "Please take this as a sample"(请将这个拿去当样品。)

    --How about a break?

—You can use our office equipment if necessary.

例如,大大方方地告诉他“ You can use our office equipment if necessary.”(如果必要的话,您可以使用我们的办公室设备。)

    —What is your opinion?

或“ Id like to hear your ideas about the problem.”(我想听听你对这个问题的看法。)

Promotion

Our son, Chris, is a premed student at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro. He is fortunate to have a job in the research lab, where they are studying Lyme disease.

Recently he called home and told us that he had received a promotion. "Great!" I said. "You can always use more money."

There was a slight pause before Chris responded, "Well, I didn't exactly get more money. But they did give me more keys."
